Why porcelain?
Porcelain has a long and rich history, it is used for a lot of objects in your daily life that we are barely aware of. For instance it’s been used for tableware, decorative ware such as figurines, toilets and washbasins, and products in technology and industry such as electrical insulators and laboratory ware.
Properties of porcelain are considerable strength, hardness, whiteness, and a high resistance to corrosive chemicals and thermal shock. Being completely vitrified the surface is impermeable even before glazing. It does not need glazing to render them impermeable to liquids and for the most part are glazed for decorative purposes and to make them resistant to dirt and staining. Unglazed porcelain will have a toothy surface while glazed is glossy and smooth.
As an artist it’s a complicated but beautiful material to work with, the pigments are mixed directly into the clay and are color fast and will never wear off or fade.
What about environmental impact?
Our relationship with the environment is complicated. As I’m taking inspiration from nature I would like to have an as little environmental impact as possible. I dislike the current consumer culture and designed obsolesce, I try to design in a way that produces a durable product. Porcelain is robust, you only have to buy a toy once and with good care it will last you a life time.
In the process of producing the toys I try to make good choices. Designs are made on paper and then 3D sculpted. The prints are durable so I can use them to make new molds multiple times., they are made from PLA filament which is biodegradable and produced from renewable plant-based raw materials. The molds itself are made with plaster, each mold can produce about 10 to 15 toys before it needs to be retired, the plaster is brought to the recycling center where it’s used to make new plaster. My porcelain is produced in Germany, it’s good quality and not from too far away. During casting I collect the cut-offs to re-use at a later date and reduce waste. For packaging I use cardboard boxes and sizzle paper, these are biodegradable but sturdy enough to protect the porcelain when transported.
How to use?
As a non-porous material, porcelain is body save and compatible with any type of intimate lubricant. Clean with cold or lukewarm water and dish soap or any available toy-cleaner.
Porcelain toys are great for temperature play. As a material it is very good at taking on its environment’s temperature. Heat or chill your sex toy gradually, avoiding excessively high or low temperatures. Try it out on the inside of your wrist or thigh, and ensure it’s a comfortable temperature before proceeding to explore your sensitive areas.
Safety?
The material is cast thick and while it’s very strong and almost unbreakable it can get damaged when it comes in contact with hard surfaces. Use it in a soft environment. Of course nothing is made for eternity, if the toy sustains any damage or exhibits chipping, discontinue its usage immediately.
